SDG 6 : Gender inequality in Iraq.

In 2015, United Nations set 17 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve with its member. Among those Sustainable Development Goals, I chose number 5 (Achieve Gender’s equality and empower women). I am looking at Iraq for a country in this blog. Iraq lies in the eastern part of the Arab world. It is bordered by Turkey in the north, east by Iran, west by Syria and Jordan. It is a middle eastern state with the least access to the sea and offshore sovereignty (Woods, n.d.)

Iraq confirms its commitment to achieve SDG 5 by 2030. Gender inequality is high in Iraq in the past. The position of women is still behind in another region compare to Kurdistan region of Iraq. The Iraq is also trying to follow the Kurdistan policy at the national level to eliminate gender inequality (Kaya, 2018)

In 2019 Iraq held a conference to shape the vision of Iraqi women on the SDG's agenda. They discussed about the position of women, their ways o strengthens the women empowerment and placed the SDG 5 in their top priority in the developing process. They are building an effective administration to include women in politics, encourage them in the developmental works in society (Iraq Reconfirms Commitment to Achieve SDG 5 and the Empowerment of Women, 2019)

Conclusion: Iraq is also working in SDG 5 like other nations hopefully by 2030 we reach all the goals.

  1. hi,
It is really nice to see a country like Iraq that what is really against gender equality is now changing their ways in becoming equal amongst the genders. And the fact that they were going and making meetings to achieve goal number five it’s really impressive. That is not just talking amongst a few people up at the actual government. I find it really fascinating that they have women in powerful rules such as politics and also encouraging them to develop mental works in the society. And that they’re also following some of their policies, such as Kurdistan. I like to always be proven wrong about some of the countries in middle east towards the women. I like the fact that they are really putting the efforts in making the moves to making sure that their country is more safer for women to be in powerful rules and do powerful things in the country instead of just being seen and not and I heard. Hopefully, one day, it becomes a thing of the past.

  2. Hello there Alisha,
I was able to understand the flow and tone of your blog when it comes to Iraq and gender equality. With that being said, they are subverting heteronormative gender roles based on domesticity and submission and reasserting their presence in the public sphere and drawing inspiration. Which I believe is a start so women can feel as one and more safer to go about their lives.

SDG Blog 3: Gender inequality in Bangladesh.

In 2015, United Nations set 17 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve with its member. Among those Sustainable Development Goals, I chose number 5 (Achieve Gender’s equality and empower women). The best way to measure the progress of a nation is y looking at the way how they treat females. The topic of gender equality covers all the burning issues worldwide. They are  women's education, maternal health, economic empowerment of females, and the role of women in family, community, politics, and more. According to the study conducted by the UN, "women constitute more than two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population. Another research depicts that 80% of the world’s refugees are women. Also, women only own 1% of the world’s resources and earn a small part (1/10th) of the world’s income  (Srivastava, 2019)."       Bangladesh is located in South Asia bordered by India from  three sides, ...
